The Bohéries Monastery (Boheriae) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Vadencourt in the Aisne department , Picardy region , in France , 4 km west of Guise , in the Oise valley .
history
The monastery was founded in 1141 as a subsidiary of Foigny Abbey , the third daughter of Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The monk Arnulf von Bohéries , who wrote the “speculum monachorum”, lived in it at the beginning of the 13th century . The monastery was destroyed and rebuilt several times. At the time of the French Revolution there were only seven monks left.
Buildings and plant
The monastery homestead, classified as a monument historique , dates from the mid-18th century. A monumental octagonal pigeon house, two symmetrical wings, a cellar, communs and stables from the 17th and 18th centuries as well as part of the surrounding wall have been preserved. The monastery's irrigation system has also largely been preserved. The stones from the monastery were used to build the nearby village. The organ has been moved to Hirson's parish church .
