history

Franciscan monastery

Since the Middle Ages, Franciscans have covered Corsica with a series of monasteries. This included the establishment of the Saint-François de la Piève d'Aregno monastery in 1456 , which was dissolved by the French Revolution in 1791 .

Dominican monastery

On the initiative of Toussaint Casanelli d'Istria , Bishop of Ajaccio from 1833 to 1869, the French Dominicans tried from 1856 to renovate the monastery, which opened in 1861 as the Couvent Saint Dominique Priory . The first prior was Hyacinthe-Marie Cormier . In 1880, the Dominican preaching in Paris , Henri Didon, was exiled to Corbara because he had rebelled against the religious hierarchy. There he was visited by Guy de Maupassant . From 1884 the monastery was a training center for Dominican monks.

20th century and present

In 1903 the monks were expelled by the anti-congregational Third Republic and could not return until 1927. From 1914 to 1920 the monastery served as a place of internment for German and Austrian civilians who were on French soil when the war broke out. Alain Peyrefitte wrote his book Le mal français (1976, German: What will become of France?, 1978) in the Corbara monastery. After parts of the monastery were destroyed by a forest fire in 1986, the last two monks left the place in 1992. The monastery was taken over by the community of St. John , who still inhabit it today. The buildings have been a listed building since 2011.
