The Himmelpforten monastery is a now defunct Augustinian hermit monastery near Hasserode , a district of Wernigerode .

history

The monastery was founded in 1253 by the Lords of Hartesrode in a protected forest valley northwest of Hasserode. They chose this site because Wilhelmite Brothers had already resided here. The Augustinians operated fish farming and even viticulture, among other things. In 1516, Himmelpforten was visited by Martin Luther , where he met with his friar and friend, Vicar General Johann von Staupitz . There is no evidence that there was talk of the indulgence trade . The Luther memorial stone erected in 1917 commemorates the meeting.

In the Peasants' War , peasants revolted against taxes and tithes ; After obviously fruitless negotiations, which Cord Hoidop initially conducted with the monks, angry farmers stormed the monastery on April 30 or May 1, 1525 under the leadership of Wernigerode doctor Wiardes, Jakob Schüttes and Nöschenröder Schankwirt Danzke and looted it. According to tradition, the monks fled to the place now called the monks' deposit not far from the Steinerne Renne in the Harz Mountains. Contrary to the legend, the farm and church buildings were not destroyed, but only "pounded and spoiled", as the peasant leaders who were later imprisoned reported. After they swore primal feud , the death penalty was commuted to expulsion.

The expelled monks moved to the monastery again under their new prior Peter Gröning, the buildings including the church were still in use for a few decades, but steadily fell into disrepair and were almost completely removed and used as building material until the middle of the 19th century. Several trout ponds of the monastery, including the Ütschenteich , and remains of a foundation wall have been preserved to this day .

Today, the valley in which the Himmelpforten monastery was located is known as the start and finish point of the Harz mountain run that takes place every October . Every year on Ascension Day , Christians gather at the former monastery for an ecumenical service.

The remains of the monastery are now on the Harz monastery hiking trail .
