The Neubourg monastery (Neuburg, Novum Castrum) was a Cistercian abbey in Alsace in France . It was located in what is now the Bas-Rhin (Lower Rhine ) department in the municipality of Dauendorf , around nine kilometers west of Haguenau (Hagenau).
history
Neuburg Monastery was not founded before 1130, but not after 1133 by Count Reinhold von Lützelburg (Renaud de Lutzelbourg) as the daughter of Lützel Monastery (Lucelle), a daughter of Bellevaux Monastery from the filiation of the Morimond Primary Abbey , and settled by Lützel. Neuburg was the mother monastery of Maulbronn Monastery , Monastery Baumgarten and monastery Herrenalb . From the 14th to the 17th century, the abbey was destroyed several times, but rebuilt. During the French Revolution , the Cistercian monastery came to a violent end in 1790.
Buildings, facilities, equipment
The abbey church was consecrated in 1158. It was renewed in 1758, but like the entire monastery complex, it was closed in 1818. A baroque portal from 1744, a mill and parts of the monastery wall have been preserved. The rococo wooden furnishings are now in the Church of St. Nikolaus in Haguenau (choir stalls, organ cases, pulpit, statues, sculptures) and in the Musée historique of the same city (door leaves). The “bee fountain” in front of the St. Georg church also comes from the Neubourg monastery complex.
