St. Nicholas (Haguenau)
The parish church of St. Nikolaus (French: Église Saint-Nicolas ) is one of the most important sacred buildings in the city of Haguenau in Alsace. The church has been a monument historique since 1930 .
history
The church was founded in 1189 by Frederick I "Barbarossa" as a hospital church and in 1208 was elevated to a parish church by the Strasbourg bishop, Heinrich II. Von Veringen. Construction of the current Gothic building began in 1289 and was extended to the east in the 15th century. The church suffered considerable damage in World War II , but was fundamentally restored from 1965 onwards.
Dimensions
The known dimensions of the church are as follows:
- Inner length: 55 meters
- Inside width: 16 meters
- Interior height: 13 meters
- Bell tower height: 59 meters
Furnishing
The St. Nicholas Church is known for its baroque furnishings, which are unique in the surrounding area : Choir stalls , organ prospectus , pulpit , life-size church fathers' statues and other smaller sculptures (Madonna and Child, blessing God the Father, communion relief) made of dark-colored linden wood come from the course of the French Revolution dissolved and destroyed Neubourg monastery near Dauendorf . All works show a high degree of mastery in execution and imagination in design. Another ornament of the sacred building is a Gothic holy grave from 1360, which was originally located in the Stephanskapelle in Strasbourg . The stained glass windows are modern in style.
organ
The organ has a new organ from 1987. The organ case itself dates from the 18th century and is protected as a monument historique . It housed an instrument that was built in 1747 by the organ builder Johann Georg Rohrer for the Cistercian abbey church in Neubourg. This instrument and its case were sold to Haguenau in 1804 and installed in St. Nicolas. After several revisions and repairs in the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the organ was so defective in 1980 that it was decided to have the organ work completely restored by the organ builder Alfred Kern .
