Parish church Spieskappel

The monastery Spieskappel in the district Spieskappel the town of Frielendorf in the Hessian Schwalm-Eder was a Romanesque monastery complex , which consists of a Canons and a Prämonstratenserinnenkloster existed. The basilica of Oberkappel is used today as the parish church of St. Johannes of the Protestant community Frielendorf-Spieskappel, while little of the other facilities has been preserved. The late Staufer building sections of the church show relationships and similarities to the architectural style and the builders of the Fritzlar Cathedral .

history

Canon monastery

In 1143 the Premonstratensians founded the Kappel Monastery, which was free of customs duties , had the right to mint and had its own broadcasting court . The canons produced "Kasselerbraun" as a color pigment in one of the two monastery mills. In the Marie mine in Ringsberg, ocher was mined, which was then processed and refined. The monastery was affected by the fire of Kappel in 1301 and looted in the Star Wars in 1372. In 1527 the monastery was abolished as a result of the Reformation . Today there is hardly any structural evidence of the monastery complex, apart from the monastery church. The flat-roofed Romanesque basilica was built around 1145 to 1255 . Of this, the nave and the left aisle remained, while around 1500 the right aisle and the east side were demolished. The monastery buildings were demolished in the 17th century. Only small remains of them have survived.

On the night of September 28-29, 1529, Martin Luther stayed overnight with Ulrich Zwingli in the monastery buildings of Spieskappel during his trip to the Marburg Religious Discussion .

Premonstratensian pen

Practically nothing has survived from the Premonstratensian monastery founded in 1145.

The church

From 1500 to 1504 the Romanesque west tower of the basilica of the male monastery, today's village church of St. Johannes ("monastery church"), was replaced by a late Gothic square tower. The tower hall with a star vault dates from 1505. In the tower there is a vestibule with a richly structured step portal. In the tympanum there are half-length portraits of Mary , John and Jesus Christ . Inside, the arcades to the north aisle have alternating supports . The column capitals bear human figures between tendrils of leaves or men's or women's heads with intertwined hair. In the east the church is flat closed. The wall is pierced by late Gothic windows. From 1769 to 1771 the richly decorated rococo organ was built by the Bad Hersfeld organ builder Johannes Schlottmann . The Romanesque St. Michaels Chapel above the tower hall is accessible from the organ stage. In the middle of the former Romanesque west gable wall is a late Romanesque altar with canopy with two side altar niches. The room is designed in a late Gothic style. In the monastery garden there is a late Gothic fountain basin with a flat relief that was built in 1509.

The bells

The tower houses a four-part bell ringing in the tone sequence d'-f'-g'-b '. The three largest bells hang in a wooden belfry, the smallest in a separate steel belfry. In the two world wars, the bells of 1914 and 1922 were melted down for armament purposes. The smallest bell (No. 4) was purchased on the occasion of the 700 year church consecration. A mechanical striking mechanism works on bell 1 for the half-hourly clock strike.

Modern times

On the site of the former canon monastery in Unterkappel, there is now a chemical plant owned by Hexion Specialty Chemicals Inc., which was created in 2005 from the merger of Bakelite AG and Borden Chemicals Inc.

The monastery church of Oberkappel is today a Protestant parish church. Eckhard Käßmann, then married to Margot Käßmann , who later became the regional bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hanover , was pastor in the associated community of Frielendorf-Spieskappel from 1985 to 1990 .

In 2002 , the Protestant Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck , the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and the German Federal Environment Foundation carried out a research project to develop concepts for the preservation of environmentally damaged tuff stones at the former monastery church. In 2004 the research results were published.

Monument protection

The entire monastery area is a listed building as a whole in accordance with Section 18 HDSchG . The church and the rest of the former monastery building are also protected as individual monuments.
