The Vitskøl Abbey (Witheschøle, Vitae Scola) is a former Zisterzienserkloster in Denmark .
location
The monastery is located in the Nordjylland region (North Jutland) in the municipality of Vesthimmerland in the village of Ranum south of the town of Løgstør on the Limfjord .
history
The monastery was founded in 1158 by King Waldemar I (the great); as a late consequence of the Reformation in 1536 , it was dissolved in 1563 . It was a subsidiary of the Esrom Monastery from the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey ; however, the first monks came from Varnhem Monastery in Sweden , from where they had been expelled. The Sminge Monastery (later moved to Øm ) was founded from Vitskøl in 1165 .
Buildings and plant
The large three-nave church with transept was finally abandoned in 1668 . Ruins of the complex are still visible. The west wing of the enclosure south of the church has been preserved, the east wing z. T. rebuilt.
