Monastery Esrom (Esrum) is a former Cistercian - Abbey in Denmark , whose name in particular by the eponymous cheese is known. The monastery is located on the island of Zealand (Sjælland) on the north side of Esrum Lake near Græsted.
history
The monastery, built around 1140 as a Benedictine monastery, was taken over by the Cistercians around 1151 and existed until the Reformation in 1536; the last monks are said to have left it in 1559. It was a daughter house of Branch Clairvaux and mother monastery of Vitskøl Abbey , Abbey Soro , the monastery male in Schleswig-Holstein , from monastery Dargun in Mecklenburg (Initial establishment), and three Pomeranian monasteries monastery Eldena near Greifswald, Kołbacz Abbey in Szczecin and the daughter of foundation von Kolbatz Monastery Oliva near Danzig.
Buildings and plant
The church was a three-aisled basilica with a transept and a rectangular choir. The south wing and the watermill have been preserved from the medieval monastery.
