The Roman Catholic monastery church of the Sisters of the Cross is located at Murlingengasse 71–73 in Vienna - Meidling and was built in 1904/05 according to plans by Heinz Gerl .

history

The Swiss Franciscan Order of the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross , also known as the Cross Sisters for short, came to the Vienna suburb of Meidling in 1877, where they ran a children's institution, an orphanage and a sewing school. At first they owned a small private chapel in the building of the Meidlinger Bahnhof , they also lived in the station building and looked after the children of the railway employees. Since there were no churches in the heavily populated workers' district around 1900, they were granted permission to build a monastery building with an associated church near the train station. In 1904, the Sisters of the Cross moved to the current location. The church was consecrated on February 4, 1905 in the presence of Mayor Karl Lueger . In 1913 the monastery in Meidling became part of the newly established order province of Laxenburg . In 1931 the church had to be expanded by the architect Otto Prutscher . A kindergarten is run in the monastery today.

Building description

The monastery church only emerges through a small bell attachment and the niche figure of St. Josef, because the church front is integrated into the facade of the monastery. The monastery called Marienheim is a three-story building that looks like an apartment building.

Inside the church consists of a barrel-vaulted rectangular hall, which was expanded by two broad choir bays and a chapel after the renovation by Otto Prutscher. The room is opened to the monastery by light gaden. Stylistically, it is a neo-Romanesque interior.

The pieces of equipment include a wooden cross on the altar wall and wooden figures of a Madonna, St. Joseph and one St. Anthony of Padua by the woodcarver Franz Martimer from Val Gardena. The baroque altar of the original church is now in the side chapel. The crossway reliefs date from the 1950s.

In the monastery building there are stained glass windows depicting St. Francis of Assisi, Antonius of Padua, Anna and Margareta Alacoque in the stairwell, in the prayer room on the 1st floor also a glass window with the dove of the Holy Spirit and figures of St. Maria and Joseph, all of whom date from the time the building was built.
