Klytia (daughter of Pandareus)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Clytia ( ancient Greek Κλυτία even Klytie, Latin Clytia ) is in Greek mythology a daughter of Pandareos and Harmothoe. Her sister was Kameiro .

In the Odyssey , Penelope tells that the daughters of Pandareos - (in the traditions of the scholias about the Odyssey place they are called Kleothera and Merope ) - after the death of their parents brought about by the gods, because Pandareus had drawn the wrath of Zeus through a theft - raised by Aphrodite , Hera , Artemis and Athena and provided with food and gifts. From Aphrodite they got food in the form of cheese, honey and wine, from Hera the understanding and the beauty, from Artemis a slim figure and from Athena feminine artistry. When Aphrodite ascended to Olympus to arrange a suitable wedding for the two of them, they were stolen by the harpies and given to the Erinyes as servants.

Klytia was depicted with her sister Kamiro on a painting by Polygnotus in the Lesche der Knidier in Delphi . In the painting, according to Pausanias , the girls wore wreaths of flowers on their heads and they played with dice. Polygnotos had added the names of the two to the picture as an explanation.
