Knaus is a district of the Upper Swabian market of Erkheim in the Unterallgäu district in Bavaria .

The hamlet is almost completely surrounded by forest. To the west is the Im Gehren forest , south of the Plattenberg , which is 688 meters above sea level . North extending Bundesautobahn 96 in the coal mine tunnel . The Kohlberg , a 680 meter high elevation, lies a little north of the motorway.

In the past, the place formed the border between the district of Memmingen and the district of Mindelheim . The old name of the settlement was Rudungsried , which could indicate a clearing commissioned by Abbot Rudung from the Ottobeuren monastery . It was first mentioned in 135 when Heinrich Vogillin acquired an interest loan in Rudungsried from a member of the Ottobeuren monastery. Around 1484, the Knuss family lived in Knaus, from which the name of the place can be derived, which, however, only became established for the settlement in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Fuggers demanded high jurisdiction around 1600 , but could not assert themselves against the Ottobeuren monastery, which they owned. Formerly part of Sontheim , the place came to Schlegelsberg , with which it was incorporated into Erkheim on May 1, 1978.
