The Bone Karl is a memorial from 1937 in Hofstede by Joseph Enseling (1886–1957) for miners who perished during the First World War .

The bronze memorial is intended to commemorate the 475 war and labor deaths that the United Constantin the Great (Shaft I) collapsed during the First World War. That was 23 percent of the workforce. Model for the sculpture was the Hauer Karl Mieling (1908-1991), of the nickname was "bone-Karl".

On August 2, 1937, the memorial was inaugurated at the intersection of Herner Strasse and Vierhausstrasse. The Bochumer Anzeiger commented at the time: "This memorial, a creation by Professor Enseling in Essen, makes a lasting impression on every viewer with its simple size and expressive symbolism."

During construction of the rail line U35 head office was RAG demolished and the monument in 1973 removed. The miner Heinz Esken, deputy chairman of the SPD local association Hofstede and integration officer at Ruhrkohle AG, discovered the sculpture ten years later by chance in the park of the former Hibernia head office in Herne and advocated the return.

On November 7, 1987, the memorial was returned to its old location. Mieling himself, who meanwhile lived in the Eifel, unveiled the monument. On October 14, 2012, a commemoration for the 75th anniversary of sculpture and the 25th anniversary was held at the new location.
