Knudsgilde (Schleswig)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Knudsgilde in Schleswig was founded in the 12th century by long-distance traders in honor of the last Jarl von Schleswig Knud Lavard . After the founding of the first guild in Schleswig, further Knuds guilds emerged in the Danish and Scandinavian countries. The structure of the Knudsgilden was reminiscent of the German Hanseatic League , with which they sometimes competed.

background

In the 12th century Schleswig was a flourishing trading town. Flensburg to the north was still in its founding phase. Under oath , the guild brothers swore to stand by in case of illness and need. The sworn assistance could also lead to blood revenge. Knud Lavard ( 1096 ; † 1131 ) was also a member of the Knudsgilde named after him, in which the Schleswig merchants were organized in the form of a guild . After the assassination of Knud Lavard by his cousin Magnus, the son of the Danish King Niels in 1131, the people of Schleswig took revenge. Three years later they killed King Niels, who fled to Schleswig after the battle of Fodevig .

The Schleswig Knudsgilde exerted a strong influence on the history of Schleswig. Schleswig was temporarily ruled by the guild. Schleswig's Knudsgilde had a council set up in Schleswig during the time of Knuth Lavard , which initially consisted of four elderly men , one for each part of the village. Later, the senior man of the Knudsgilde appointed and dismissed councilors. It is possible that the Schleswig Knudsbrüder were also involved in the establishment of the Sankt Marien settlement on the Flensburg Fjord around 1170 , which is part of the core city of Flensburg . Around this time, the Flensburg branch of the Knudsgilde was founded . The statutes of the community, which were recorded in the old Danish language around 1200 , are still preserved in Flensburg today. The location of a unification that has continued over the centuries can only be proven selectively in Schleswig. Wars and other alliances and entanglements have disrupted the continuity. During the Reformation , most of the Knuds' guilds lost their importance and eventually disbanded. The Schleswig guild is likely to have dissolved at that time as well.

Today there is a guild in Schleswig that was named "Old Town Saint Knuds Guild of 1449". Accessible archive documents show no connection between the Old Town St. Knudsgilde and the new Flensburg Knudsgilde . The Old Town St. Knuds Guild was first mentioned in 1449, but at that time it was still called the "Papagoy Guild". Back then, as it does today, the rifle guild organized shooting competitions called parrot shooting . A four-day shooting festival takes place in the city of Schleswig every year. It is organized alternately by the Old Town St. Knudsgilde, the Friedrichsberger Schützengilde and the Lollfusser Schützengilde. The respective sister guilds take part in the celebrations. The old town of St. Knudsgilde generates income from its leased hereditary properties in the area of Gildestrasse and Schützenredders, in the northwest of the city of Schleswig. The guild donates surpluses to other associations in the region.
