Knut Kristiansen (born April 14, 1946 in Bergen ) is a Norwegian jazz pianist.

Career

Kristiansen began his career as a jazz musician in the late 1960s when he performed with singer Mette Rongved and bassist Sture Janson . In the 1970s he was a member of several jazz bands in Bergen such as Lyderhorn (since 1972), Askøygruppen , Octopus and Piasawa (1976-77).

1979-80 he led a quintet with Per Jørgensen , of which Tore Brunborg also belonged. From 1980 to 1983 he was a member of the Steam group . He also played ethnic jazz and salsa with the groups Son Mu (1981–87) and Salsa Pati (1985–87).

On the 1985 album Day and Night , Kristiansen played mainstream jazz influenced by Thelonious Monk . In 1989 his “Requiem” was performed at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival ; the performance was released on CD in 1991. Kristiansen conducted the Monk Memorial Concert in Kongsberg in 1987 and its repetition in Bergen in 1988.

Since 1989 Kristiansen has led various groups that dealt with the work of Thelonious Monk - from 1992 under the name Monk's Music . With this he recorded the album Monk Moods with Odin between 1993 and 1995 and gave the concert A Tribute to Monk at the Oslo Jazz Festival in 1997 . He was awarded the Buddy Prize in 1983 and the Vossajazz Prize in 1990.
