KogniHome is a regional innovation cluster led by CITEC , the Cluster of Excellence at Bielefeld University .

history

KogniHome is a consortium consisting of 14 project partners. The full title of the cluster is: KogniHome - the apartment that thinks for itself . The 14 partners come from science, industry, and social and health services. The cluster was founded in 2014 and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research ( BMBF ) with eight million euros until 2017. The aim of the cluster is to design a smart home that is equipped with intelligent, learning technology. For this purpose, the cluster was divided into three sub-projects (TP) and three cross-sectional projects (QP). A digital kitchen (TP1), an intelligent entrance area (TP2) and a personal trainer (TP3) are being developed. This technology should be operable through speech or gestures. Seniors and people with cognitive impairments in particular should benefit from the technology and, with its help, lead a self-determined life as long as possible within their own four walls.

The official spokesman for the consortium is the neuro-computer scientist Helge Ritter . He has also coordinated the CITEC Cluster of Excellence since 2007. KogniHome is coordinated by Thorsten Jungeblut from the Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology ( CITEC ) at Bielefeld University . Other partners include the home appliance manufacturer Miele , the v. Bodelschwingh Foundation Bethel and the Hella company from Lippstadt. The total volume, including own funds from the project partners, is 11.3 million euros. In 2015, the KogniHome innovation cluster was voted an Excellent Place by the “ Germany - Land of Ideas ” initiative and came in fourth place in the public vote and first place in the science category. In June 2016, KogniHome was recognized as the best performance in the Germany at its best campaign .

After the KogniHome innovation cluster was extended by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research ( BMBF ) to the end of 2017 after the graduation ceremony on June 23, 2017 , the association "KogniHome - Technology-Supported Living for People eV" was founded on December 14, 2017. The founding members are: the v. Bodelschwingh Foundation Bethel , the Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology ( CITEC ), Hettich , Miele , Steinel , Eben-Ezer and Hella . The board consists of: Ingmar Steinhart ( v. Bodelschwinghschen Stiftungen Bethel ), Thorsten Jungeblut ( Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC)) and Ralf Müterthies ( Hettich ).

Project structure

The KogniHome innovation cluster is divided into three sub-projects (TP) and three cross-sectional projects (QP):

Digital kitchen (TP 1)

In the digital kitchen sub-project, the consortium is developing technologies that facilitate cooking and the kitchen environment in general. With the intelligent kitchen unit, complicated recipes such as crème brûlée can be cooked. A recipe tracking assistant navigates the cook through the individual cooking steps and provides information. The cook can also communicate with the system through gestures and speech and does not have to use his wet hands. In addition, the digital kitchen can switch off automatically, for example, if it detects that the milk is about to boil over.

Intelligent entrance area (TP 2)

The intelligent entrance area is divided into: a cloakroom mirror that thinks for itself, an intelligent door and a functionalized dressing room. The mirror can give suggestions for clothes or indicate that a window is still open when leaving the apartment. The intelligent door recognizes the residents of the apartment by their faces using a camera and can open automatically. The dressing room is networked with both systems and can put out the right clothes.

Personal trainer (TP 3)

Subproject 3 includes active seating and a virtual avatar . On the one hand, the seating furniture can be individually adapted to the user, on the other hand, the roommates can use it to do strength training or fitness exercises . The virtual avatar can provide assistance and, for example, ensure that it is carried out correctly.

ELSI aspects (QP 1)

The acronym ELSI stands for Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (in German also ELSSA : ethical, legal, safety-related and social aspects). In this cross-sectional project, the partners deal with questions of ethics that are raised by the development of assistance technology. In this context, the consortium is also researching the legal and safety-related consequences of KogniHome. Social aspects are particularly important due to the use of KogniHome by seniors or people with cognitive impairments. The consortium is therefore planning to develop an ethical manifesto.

Virtual dialog assistants (QP 2)

In the KogniHome, a virtual dialogue assistant is supposed to deal with the residents' concerns in every room. It will be available in the front door, in the living room and in the kitchen in the form of a display. They are adaptable and can be customized by the residents. They can be operated using speech and gestures and should be programmed so intelligently that they can adapt better and better to the residents of the KogniHome.

Networking (QP 3)

Cross-sectional project 3 deals on the one hand with the networking of the individual components of the KogniHome and on the other hand with the localization of the individual residents within the apartment. Safety aspects such as those examined in QP 2 are also taken into account.
