Kohldampf is the debut album by the German rapper Maxwell . It was released on March 24, 2017 on the independent label Auf! Keinen! Fall! and is distributed through Chapter One ( Universal Music ).

background

On September 15, 2016, the album of the Hamburg was rap - Crew 187 street gang announced the Maxwell belongs. This came in the form of a Facebook comment in response to a user asking when 187 Strassenbande would release a new album.

The entire album was produced by Jambeatz , who has already participated in various 187 productions. The only exception is the song Es rollt, which was produced by Beataura. The other members of the 187 Strassenbande ( Gzuz , Sa4 , LX and Bonez MC ) are - as is usual with other 187 publications - represented with numerous guest contributions on the album.

The album debuted at number 2 in the German album charts determined by GfK Entertainment .

Cover design

The album cover is in cartoon style and shows the rapper Maxwell. He smiles at it. In the background you can see the Heinrich Hertz Tower and a ferris wheel. Above is 187 street gang in capital letters. Below is the name of the rapper and the album title in capital letters.

The album received mostly mixed reviews.

At the e-zine laut.de the album was rated three out of five possible stars. The beats of the producer Jambeatz are "cleanly produced" . Maxwell gave "incessantly Reims volleys and sketched the familiar picture of the notorious gang" . Nonetheless, he says, “no cliché, no matter how worn, is left unserved” . Accordingly, the "listening pleasure as well as recognition value" decrease.

The editors of the hip-hop magazine Backspin are mostly positive. So "despite the high pressure of expectations [...] the first album is very good for a long time" . But from the rapper Maxwell "you search in vain for experiments or a completely unique sound" .

From the point of view of the editor Gilbert Nagel of the hip-hop blog rap.de , Maxwell is "not quite sure where his strengths lie or what his unique selling point is" . The songs stay with a "balance of hardness and humor in the head" .

MZEE editor Lukas Maier, on the other hand, thinks that “not every problem area can be eradicated only through the routine presentation, but it helps that" Kohldampf "remains in the memory as a rock-solid record." Summa sumarum it is "a record that does not reinventing the wheel, but doing right what was important: entertainment. "
