history

The collegiate foundation was founded by Ludwig von Rothenstein († 1482) in 1479. During this time the parish church of St. Philip and Jacob, located in the immediate vicinity, was rededicated as a collegiate church. The collegiate monastery was established for twelve canons . They chose a canon dean from among their ranks . The number of twelve canons was hardly ever reached after the early years. The monastery income was specified in Ludwig von Rothenstein's deed of foundation. Due to the religious split ( Roman Catholic and Evangelical Reformed ) in Grönenbach from 1559 by Philipp von Pappenheim , the income from the monastery was divided between the denominations. The collegiate monastery burned down on February 25, 1572 and was rebuilt in the following years. In order to be able to preserve the collegiate monastery in Grönenbach after the Reformation, Alexander von Pappenheim acquired a conservatory from Emperor Rudolph II in 1602. In 1692 the Grönenbach collegiate monastery returned to the Kempten abbot Rupert von Bodman . Rupert von Bodman solemnly took possession of the collegiate monastery on January 1 and 2, 1692 with a large retinue. In the course of secularization in Bavaria in 1803, the collegiate foundation was also abolished on May 14, 1804. The monastery building is now used as the rectory of the Roman Catholic community in Bad Grönenbach.

Pen oath

The following oath had to be taken by all canons when they were accepted into the collegiate foundation:

"Ego NN juro et promitto Deo omnipotenti et BM Virgini sanctisque Philippo et Jacobo, Apostolis et Patronis quod R mo Ep °. Augustano ejusque Vicario et Tibi NN Collegii hujus Grönenbacensi Decano fidelis et obediens statuta praescripta et mandata tua salubria in omnibus reverenter et effectualiter suscipiam et exequar, sic me Deus adjuvet et haec sancta Dei Evangelia. "

After this oath the intronization followed :

“Auctoritate quâ fungor ordinariâ mihi commissâ admitto et intronizo Te NN in collegiatam nostram Ecclesiam et admissum constituo Te in statum tuum Chori unâ cum aliis presbyteris Collegis iuxta ritum August. dioecesis legendi et decantandi horas Canonicas, offerendi sacrificium Deo propitiatorium et si videbitur administrandi aliaque sacramenta penes meum in curâ pastorali Coadjutorem. In Nomine † Patris et † Filii et † Spiritus sancti. Amen."

Allgäu awakening movement

The collegiate monastery in Grönenbach came into contact with the Allgäu revival movement through the Roman Catholic priest Martin Boos (* 1762; † 1825) , as Martin Boos was canon in the monastery from 1792 to 1799.

Vita communis after Bartholomäus Holzhauser

Bartholomäus Holzhauser, contemporary painting

Since 1681 almost all canons in the monastery lived according to the rules of Bartholomäus Holzhauser . This is made clear by the fact that in the name of the following canons the addition “Cleric. Saecul. in communi viventium sacerdos “was added.
