Komga is a city in the South African province of Eastern Cape (Eastern Cape). It is the administrative seat of the Great Kei Community in Amathole District .

In 2011 Komga had 8,090 inhabitants (census). IsiXhosa is spoken most often with 89% . The city is 64 kilometers north of East London and 55 kilometers east of Stutterheim .
history
Komga was founded in 1877 as an agricultural center on the area of a military camp established in 1854. The name comes from the Khoisan and means something like "loamy" or "brown". In 1904 Komga was recognized as a municipality. Until its dissolution in 1994, Komga lay in the land corridor between the homelands Transkei and Ciskei .
Economy and Transport
The Komga Hospital, run by the province, is in Komga .
The city is on the R61 trunk road , which connects Komga with King William's Town in the southwest and National Route 2 , which passes Komga just a few kilometers east and links East London in the south with Gcuwa in the northeast. Komga has a train station on the Amabele – Mthatha route , which is used by freight.
Attractions
The Anglican St. Paul's Church was built by descendants of the settlers from 1820 and is a national monument, as is the Public Library .
