After the German occupation of Norway in July 1940, the Navy set up the command post of the Arctic Coast Sea Defense , which was initially subordinate to the Admiral of the Norwegian north coast and in August 1940 moved to the newly created area of ​​the Admiral of the Norwegian Arctic Coast , which was also based in Tromsö . At the same time, the agency received its new designation Maritime Commander Tromsö .

The command of the sea commander stretched from the Finnish - Russian border in the north to the Finnfjordbotn in the south. During the war, first the area of ​​the sea ​​commandant Kirkenes (March 1941), then the area of ​​the sea ​​commandant Hammerfest (March 1942) and finally parts of the area of ​​the sea ​​commandant Harstad (January 1945) were outsourced.
