The building of the former denominational boys' school Finsterwalde , the later Janusz Korczak high school , is the largest school building in the city of Finsterwalde , Straße der Jugend 1. It was built between 1912 and 1913 and is a listed building .

history

The school building forms an ensemble with the neighboring children's home. The assembly was carried out according to a design by the Berlin architect Max Taut , who was awarded 2nd prize in an architectural competition in 1911 . The foundation stone was laid on August 12, 1912. The history of the preparatory work as well as coins, newspapers and a certificate were built into the foundation stone in a time capsule . In 1913 the building was inaugurated as a denominational boys 'school , ie as a Protestant boys' primary school . The sculptural decoration of the building was created based on models by the sculptor Wilhelm Repsold .

The children's home, which was financed by a foundation from the Finsterwald textile entrepreneur Kommerzienrat Max Koswig (* 1854) and his wife Anna Koswig , existed from 1913 to 1943 and then served as a hospital until 1998. Since then the building has not been used.

During the Second World War , a hospital was temporarily set up in the school and the children's home . After the war, the school building housed a vocational school , an auxiliary school , the high school "Johann Wolfgang von Goethe" and the music school. In 1978 the school was named by Janusz Korczak .

After 1991 the Janusz Korczak Primary School and the Janusz Korczak Grammar School were housed in the building complex .

present

In the 2006/2007 school year, the Janusz Korczak High School was merged with the Singing City High School. The now only grammar school in Finsterwalde is the Sängerstadt grammar school , which mainly teaches secondary level I here . In the future, this building and the building of the inner ward of the hospital, which had been renovated by then, will accommodate all students of the high school. The renovation began on March 20, 2013 with a small ceremony . The modernization should be completed at the beginning of the school year 2014/15.

The two Taut buildings (Straße der Jugend 1 and 3, Weststraße during construction) celebrated their 100th anniversary in spring 2014 with a special exhibition in the Finsterwalde district museum .
