The Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- and Volkenkunde (abbreviation: KITLV ; German  Royal Institute for Languages, Countries and Ethnology ) or Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (German Royal Dutch Institute for Southeast Asian and Karabian Research ) in Leiden is a research institute for the history and culture of the tropical regions with a focus on Southeast Asia and the Caribbean , i. H. Indonesia , Suriname as well as the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba from the former Dutch colonial possessions .

The institute was founded in 1851 . The director of the KITLV is Gert Oostindie .

On July 1, 2014, a significant change in the history of the institute occurred, on this date the direct relationship between the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNAW) and the Learned Society ( KITLV ) came to an end. KITLV Press had already been taken over by Brill two years earlier .

The Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences , Leiden University and the Learned Society (KITLV) signed a number of agreements regarding the future of the KITLV. The learned society entrusts the care of the world-famous collections of the University Library in Leiden and the KITLV continues to exist as a research organization of the KNAW, deeply embedded in the research community of the University of Leiden, but still linked to other humanities institutes of the KNAW.

The institute publishes and distributes academic books on Southeast Asia and the Caribbean. The three journals Bijdragen tot de Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde , Journal of Indonesian Social Sciences and Humanities and New West Indian Guide / Nieuwe West-Indische Gids are published by the institute, as are the book series Verhandelingen van het Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde and Bibliotheca Indonesica with important publications on Malay literature .

A department of the institute has existed in the Indonesian capital Jakarta since 1969 .

Some ethnographic classics, such as B. Writings by Albert C. Kruyt (1869–1949) or Jacob Mallinckrodt appeared in his publications.
