Konrad Kleinknecht

Konrad Kleinknecht (born April 23, 1940 in Ravensburg ) is a German physicist .

life and work

Kleinknecht studied physics at the universities of Munich and Heidelberg from 1958 to 1963 . In 1966 he was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. PhD . He then worked as a research assistant at CERN in Geneva until 1969 , then as a research assistant at Heidelberg University until 1972, where he completed his habilitation in 1971 . In 1972 he was appointed to a chair at the University of Dortmund , where he built up the particle physics department and became dean , vice dean and head of the institute. In 1985 he moved to the University of Mainz . From 1989 to 1992 he was chairman of the Particle Physics Association of the German Physical Society (DPG) and from 1997 to 1999 a member of the board of the DPG. From 2000 to 2008 he advised the board of the DPG as a representative for climate protection .

Kleinknecht works in the field of experimental elementary particle physics , especially on weak interaction , neutrino physics and the violation of matter-antimatter symmetry . As a result of developments in the field of particle detectors , he succeeded in performing precision experiments, in particular on violating the CP symmetry in the system of neutral kaons . In 1988 the NA31 collaboration at CERN, of which he was a member, led by Heinrich Wahl, was able to provide the first signs of direct CP violation in kaons .

Kleinknecht has been the founding chairman of the Heisenberg Society since the end of 2012 .
