Konstantin Türnpu (born August 1 . Jul / 13. August  1865 greg. At the manor Klooga , Harju , Estonia , †  16th April 1927 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian composer and organist.

life and work

Konstantin Jakob Türnpu was born into the family of the dairy farmer Jaan Türnbaum. He attended the German district school in Tallinn. In his youth he founded his first choir. His musical talent was quickly recognized by educators. In 1884 Türnpu became director of the men's choir in the prestigious Tallinn Choir Association Lootus , which existed from 1877 to 1940.

From 1886 to 1891, Türnpu studied organ with Louis Homilius and composition with Julius Johannsen at the St. Petersburg Conservatory . In 1891/92 he trained as a choir director in Berlin . From 1892 Türnpu was the organist of the Tallinn Nikolaikirche ( Estonian Niguliste kirik ). In addition, he led numerous well-known Tallinn choirs such as the Revaler Liedertafel or the Nikolai Choir .

Konstantin Türnpu is best known as a composer. About 60 choir pieces come from him, as well as some solo songs. He also wrote some well-known Estonian patriotic songs, which he composed based on texts by Lydia Koidula , Carl Robert Jakobson and Ado Reinvald .
