Konstantin von Kügelgen (born January 6, 1810 in Wolsk , Saratov Oblast , † April 28, 1880 in Tartu ) was a Baltic German painter.

life and work

Konstantin von Kügelgen was born as the eldest son of the landscape painter Karl von Kügelgen (1772–1832) and his wife Emilie, b. Zoege von Manteuffel , (1788–1835) born. Karl von Kügelgen's twin brother was the history and portrait painter Gerhard von Kügelgen (1772–1820), whose wife was Emilie's sister Helene (1774–1842). His cousin was the painter and Wilhelm von Kügelgen, who became famous through his book "Jugenderinnerungen eines Alten Mannes" .

Konstantin von Kügelgen first learned painting from his father Karl. He was taught together with his cousin Carl Timoleon von Neff (1804–1876).

Konstantin von Kügelgen traveled to Italy early on . This was followed by a two-year study and work phase in Munich . After the death of his first wife Sally von Zezschwitz (1814–1839) he returned to the Baltic States . There he worked as a drawing teacher. He married his second wife Alexandrine (Aline) Zoege von Manteuffel on July 18, 1840. She died in 1846. On March 12, 1848, he married into the Baltic German aristocratic family Maydell .

In his artistic work Konstantin von Kügelgen concentrated - like his father - mainly on landscape painting.

His memoirs under the title Memories from My Life were published posthumously in 1881 in the Russian capital Saint Petersburg .

progeny

Konstantin von Kügelgen's son from his second marriage is the Baltic German journalist Konstantin Paul Gerhard von Kügelgen (1843–1904). The daughter of a third marriage is the Baltic German painter Sally von Kügelgen (1860–1928).
