history

The paddock was formerly vineyard on the side of the village with the vineyards Koppel and Unterm Heilig . At that time, ramwood was cultivated on the north side, known as the "Koppelsheck" , from which stakes were made to tie the vines .

In 1844, a summit cross ("Koppelkreuz") was erected on the paddock for the first time by Rheinbreitbach bachelors in the form of a six-meter-high wooden cross made from winepress trees from old wagon presses . In 1890 it was destroyed by a bush fire and replaced in June 1891 by an iron cross made by a master locksmith on behalf of the bachelor club. It was 10 meters high with a beam width of eight meters and a weight of 1350 kg. After the First World War, a plaque was added to the cross in 1925 for the local residents who died in this war. In 1933 a wall was built on the summit plateau. After the Second World War , at the latest, wine-growing in the paddock ended, which then became increasingly bushy. In 1953 the previous memorial plaque was replaced by three new ones for the fallen and missing from the two world wars. In 1956, all of the remaining vines froze, so that the appearance of the mountain finally changed. On the occasion of Rheinbreitbach's millennium in 1974, the iron cross on the paddock was replaced by a new one, and in 1985 the memorial plaques from 1953 were renewed.

After the line of sight between the summit cross and the town center had grown over the years, an aisle was cleared for its restoration in early 2017. The summit plateau is owned by several private property owners.
