The coral bean ( Kennedia rubicunda ) or dark purple bean or coral wine is a species within the genus Kennedia in the family Pea family (Fabaceae) in 1795 under the name Glycine rubicunda published and received in 1804 the present name. The botanical species name is derived from the Latin word rubicundus for 'bright red, red-hot' after the cloudy red crown of the flower.

description

This fast-growing, woody, sometimes prostrate climbing plant can reach heights of up to 4 m. The threefold, dark green, egg-shaped to lanceolate , occasionally rounded leaves are 2 to 8 cm wide and 3 to 12 cm long. The striking, dark red, butterfly-shaped flowers in pendulous umbels appear from January to April. The approximately 15 mm diameter flowers sit on mostly 2 to 7 cm long stems. The densely rusty hairy sepals are 10 to 15 mm long, the crown 30 to 40 mm long. The flattened legumes are 5 to 10 cm long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

The plant is one of the first to grow again after a bush fire.

distribution and habitat

The plant is endemic to Australia . It occurs in Victoria , New South Wales and Queensland and is widespread there. The coral bean is found in a wide variety of habitats, from the coast to the mountains, usually in forest and open woodland, especially in coastal areas.
