Karl Jannack

Karl Jannack ( Upper Sorbian Korla Janak ; born January 23, 1891 in Cölln ; † May 27, 1968 ibid) was a Sorbian KPD functionary, SED member of the state parliament in Saxony and Domowina functionary.

Karl Jannack spent his childhood in Cölln in Upper Lusatia . Jannack was a Schumacher by trade. He served in World War I and became a member of the SPD in 1914 . In 1918, after the end of the war, he joined the Bremen Soviet Republic and took part in the founding congress of the KPD , of which he also became a member. In 1919 he appeared publicly in Bautzen against Sorbian autonomy plans, which represented parts of the intelligentsia around Arnošt Bart after the end of the war. From 1922 to 1933 he performed various areas of responsibility as a KPD functionary in various cities, B. at the international workers' aid in Moscow or at the red aid in the Ruhr area .

At the end of May 1933 he emigrated to Lorraine / France and lived in Saarburg. From 1934 to 1940 he was the owner of a laundry in France. From January to June 1940 he was interned in France. In October 1940 he was arrested by the Gestapo and transported to Germany. His German citizenship was revoked and he was deported to Buchenwald concentration camp . There he was a member of the International Camp Committee and worked as a clerk in the sick block, which enabled him to save the lives of many prisoners.

After the fall of National Socialism, he became a member of the SED and a member of the state parliament in Saxony, where he campaigned for land reform as well as for legal equality and the promotion of the Sorbian language and culture.

From 1972 until the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Sorbian Institute for Teacher Training in Bautzen bore his name.
