The Corsican straw flower ( Castroviejoa frigida ), also called Corsican edelweiss, is a species of the daisy family (Asteraceae). It only occurs in Corsica .

description

The Corsican straw flower is an evergreen, perennial, herbaceous plant that forms creeping cushions and reaches heights of 3 to 8 (rarely up to 12) centimeters. Sterile shoots are leafed like roof tiles. The leaves measure 6 × 1 millimeters and are blunt, elongated-linear and, like the stem, thickly silver-haired.

The baskets have a diameter of 1 to 1.8 centimeters and stand individually. The bracts are white, ovate-elliptical to oblong-lanceolate and pointed.

The flowering period extends from June to July. The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.

Occurrence

The Corsican strawflower is endemic to Corsica to paleo . It occurs in silicate rock crevices at altitudes of 1100 to 2000 m and descends in gorges to 780 m. Information from Sardinia concerns a related species: Castroviejoa montelinasana (Em.Schmid) Galbany, L.Sáez & Benedí .

Systematics

The Corsican straw flower was first described in 1791 by Jacques Julien Houtou de Labillardière under the Basionym Xeranthemum frigidum . In many cases it is still under the synonym Helichrysum frigidum (Labill.) Willd. known, but was separated from Helichrysum as Castroviejoa frigida (Labill.) Galbany, L.Sáez & Benedí by Mercé Galbany , Llorenç Sáez and Carles Benedí in 2004 as a result of a taxonomic revision of immortelle and related genera . The generic name honors the Spanish botanist Santiago Castroviejo (1946–2009).

use

The Corsican straw flower is rarely used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens. The species has been in culture since 1875 at the latest.
