Kostjantyn Teodosijowytsch Schtepa (* December 3, July 15  / December 15, 1896 greg. In Lochwyzja , Poltava Governorate , Russian Empire ; † November 19, 1958 in New York , United States ) was a Ukrainian - Soviet and American historian and university rector of German descent .

Life

Kostjantyn Schtepa was born as the son of an Orthodox priest with German roots in Lochwyzja in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Poltava . From 1910 to 1914 he attended the seminary in Poltava and from 1915 studied history at the historical-philological faculty of the University of Saint Petersburg . In 1916 he was drafted into the Russian Army and fought first in World War I and then in the White Army in the Russian Civil War . After the war he continued his studies at the Faculty of History and Philology of the Historical Institute in Nischyn , which he graduated in 1922 and from then on taught there first as a lecturer and later as a professor.

In 1927 he received his doctorate from Odessa University and went to Kiev in 1930. There he headed the Department of Ancient History and the Middle Ages of the University of Kiev. In 1934 Shtepa became dean of the Faculty of History at the University of Kiev and a member of the Kiev City Council. On March 18, 1938, in the course of the cleansing wave in the Soviet Union , he was arrested, interrogated and tortured by the NKVD on charges of ideological sabotage, anti-Soviet agitation, the preparation of an armed uprising against Soviet rule, and participation in the preparation of acts of terrorism and convicted of participating in the preparation of an armed uprising against Soviet rule in Ukraine and espionage for Japan. The verdict was overturned in 1939 and he was able to continue his office.

During the German occupation of Kiev in World War II , Shtepa was head of the department of public education, editor-in-chief and from November 1941 until its closure in 1942 rector of the University of Kiev. Before the liberation of Kiev by the Red Army , he left Kiev in 1943 and immigrated to West Germany . From there he emigrated to the United States in 1952 , where he died in New York in 1958.
