history

Kräutelstein Bridge on a postcard (1905)

In the course of the construction work on the Passau – Hauzenberg railway between 1900 and 1903, the Kräutelstein Bridge was built over the Danube in 1902/03. It was blown up shortly before the end of the war in 1945 , so that in the years that followed, rail traffic from Hauzenberg and Wegscheid ended in Grubweg . On May 13, 1949, the Kräutelstein Bridge was inaugurated after the reconstruction. It had previously been rebuilt within a short time using a makeshift bridge from the Schaper-Krupp-Reichsbahn system.

Regular passenger traffic over the Kräutelstein Bridge ceased in 1971. From 1978 onwards, in addition to the still regular freight traffic, only nostalgic trips and excursions by the Passau railway enthusiasts took place. In 1997 the freight traffic was discontinued, in 2001 all traffic. Due to damage as a result of the Danube flood in 2002 , the Passau – Hauzenberg railway over the Kräutelstein Bridge was shut down.

In order to remedy the traffic problems in the district of Innstadt and to relieve the Marienbrücke , the only river crossing in the direction of the Innstadt, which is close to the city center, road traffic over the Kräutelsteinbrücke was proposed several times . In the 1990s, the SPD parliamentary group in Passau's city council proposed dual use for rail and road traffic, which was rejected due to the high financial, structural, and signaling effort. Following inquiries from various city council groups and citizens, the GEVAS engineering office examined three planned cases in 2006 for the use of the Kräutelstein Bridge as a pure road bridge. In the years 2008/09 a new investigation was carried out by the engineering office Bulicek, which in turn included a dual use for road and rail traffic. Both a conversion and a replacement building turned out to be technically possible, but uneconomical. Since the Federal Railway Authority also refused to de- dedicate the railway line over the Kräutelstein Bridge , the project was rejected again.

Since the Passau – Hauzenberg railway was closed due to flood damage, the Passau Railway Friends have been trying to reactivate it. In the years 2011 and 2012 was twice Kräutelsteinbrücke for this purpose by experts investigated. The route over the Kräutelstein Bridge is currently being renovated and will be serviced regularly again from 2022.

Location and description

Kräutelstein Bridge from the east

The Kräutelsteinbrücke crosses the Passau – Hauzenberg railway over the Danube at river kilometer 2223.28. It connects the district of Innstadt to the right of the Danube with the district of Grubweg opposite . The eastern bridgehead is around 90 meters from the Kräutelstein, through which the German-Austrian border runs. The ramp to the western bridgehead divides the site of Plant 1 of ZF Passau in Grubweg.

The core of the Kräutelstein Bridge is a 222-meter-long steel truss bridge of the Schaper-Krupp-Reichsbahn system, which was built in 1945 on the three existing bridge piers as a replacement for the Kräutelstein Bridge, which was lost in World War II. The span is twice 111 meters; the middle pillar divides the Danube at this point into two fairways for shipping. On both banks of the Danube there are foreshore bridges designed as arch bridges , which have been preserved in their original form. The eastern approach bridge is around 120 meters long and has five segment arches . The western foreland bridge is around 25 meters long and has only one arch.
