Krabbenhöft & Lampe , officially Krabbenhoft and Lampe , formerly FW Krabbenhöft or FW Krabbenhöft + Co , later KJK (Pty) Ltd. , is a trading company founded in 1880 in Keetmanshoop in German South West Africa (today Namibia ) by Friedrich Wilhelm Krabbenhöft (1853-1923) . It is considered to be the oldest existing company in the country.

history

16 years after it was founded, the company acquired a piece of land in Gibeon from Hendrik Witbooi in 1896 and opened a branch there . From December 1, 1906, the company traded under the name FW Krabbenhöft + Co , as Jürgen Jess was added as a further managing director and Oskar Lampe (1877–1961) became a partner. On November 27, 1909, the company was named Krabbenhöft & Lampe with its main office in Lüderitz . The Krabbenhöft-und-Lampe building was erected there in the same year as the headquarters. It has been under Namibian monument protection since 1979 .

From then on the company worked, in addition to the general goods trade , primarily as an importer and dealer of building materials .

On July 14, 1911, the Gibeon office was formally registered with the county office. After Krabbenhöft's death in 1923, Willi Meier joins the company as a new partner and continues to expand the business into a trading company with fabrics, sheep's wool and clothing. In addition, Krabbenhöft & Lampe worked as a forwarding agent for the German East Africa Line and Woermann Line as well as the agency for the Hansa Brewery , Coca-Cola and other beverage brands.

In the 1950s, another branch was opened in Helmeringhausen , before the branch in Gibeon was closed in the 1960s due to the guidelines under the Odendaal Plan .

After Lampe's death in 1961, his wife Juliane († 1997) took over his shares. With the decline of Lüderitz from around 1972, the business of Krabbenhöft & Lampe also declined. Oskar and Juliane's son, named Oskar, had the company wound up, but kept the real estate. He offered the company to his friend Klaus Rotmann († 2011) for purchase in 1980 . He took over the company together with Jürgen Erni and Klaus Becker and renamed it KJK (Pty) Ltd. in July 1984 . before the company changed back to the original company name Krabbenhöft & Lampe in the mid-1990s .

A few years later, Rotmann had the company's headquarters in Lüderitz extensively renovated true to the original. In 2011 he dies unexpectedly. His heiress wife decided to sell the company in 2014. The company has been under new ownership since 2015 and was registered as Close Corporation in 2016 . In addition, there is another company with the name Krabbenhoft and Lampe Selfcatering CC that operates tourist accommodation in the Lüderitz building.
