The As Pontes power plant in Puentes de García Rodríguez ( A Coruña province ) is a coal and gas power plant . It consists of four coal-fired units with 350 MW each and two combined cycle units with 430 MW each. It is known for its 356 m high chimney ( Endesa Termic ), the third highest in Europe.
The power plant burned original domestic brown coal . In 1993–1996 it was converted to burn imported coal. The charred opencast mine now serves as a cooling water pond.
Endesa applied in late 2019 to shut down the power plant's coal-fired units; shutdown is expected in 2021 or 2022.
