The Dortmund power plant is a heating and power plant in downtown Dortmund and formed the nucleus of the later United Electricity Works of Westphalia .
history
The foundation for this first as a coal power plant fired power plant was in 1897 as a power station of Dortmund by Carl Döpke set. The power plant was the first power plant in the Ruhr area that primarily served the public power supply. Four steam engines drove the generators to generate electricity. In addition to alternating current for the port and commercial areas, the power plant also supplied direct current for street and house lighting. From 1906 it also supplied the Dortmund tram .
After the founding of the Dortmunder und Verbands-Elektrizitätswerk GmbH on January 1, 1923 and its transfer to Vereinigte Elektrizitätswerke Westfalen GmbH in 1925, the power plants were further expanded. From 1953, the residual heat generated during power generation was fed into the district heating network.
In 1967 the power plant was switched to natural gas . This was done for reasons of environmental protection , as the power plant is located on Weißenburger Strasse in the immediate vicinity of residential areas near the Dortmund city center.
In 1995, electricity generation in the Dortmund power plant ended. In 2004 it was resumed with a new turbine. The old systems of the power plant were demolished in 2010.
The power plant is now operated by RWE AG with four gas-fired boiler systems. The grid connection takes place at the 110 kV high voltage level in the power grid of the operator Westfalen-Weser-Ems distribution network .
It is entered as an architectural monument in the list of monuments of the city of Dortmund . Until 2011, the power plant was a station on the route of industrial culture .
