The El Kureimat power plant ( Arabic محطة كهرباء الكريمات maḥaṭṭat kahrabāʾ al-kuraimāt ) is a thermal power plant complex in the Egyptian governorate of Bani Suwaif north of the city of Bani Suwaif on the east bank of the Nile . In 2011 the plant consists of three blocks with an installed capacity of 2800  MW .

All three blocks can be lightly fired with either natural gas or heating oil . The waste heat is dissipated into the nearby Nile, which means that no cooling towers are necessary for operation.

Unit I is designed as a conventional steam power plant , consists of two units of 650 MW each and has been in operation since 1998 and 1999, respectively. Block II and Block III are designed as combined cycle power plants and each have an output of 750 MW. Unit II went into operation in 2008, Unit III in 2010.

There is also a combined gas and solar thermal power plant on the site , which is designed as a hybrid natural gas / solar combined cycle power plant and went into operation in 2010. The system consists of a natural gas-operated part, which delivers a total of 150 MW, and a solar thermal system part with 20 MW. In particular, the solar thermal system, despite its comparatively low output, has received media interest as part of the Desertec concept and is being advertised as a model system for Desertec. The output of the solar system is less than the own requirements of the entire power plant.
