The power station Huntly is with stand 2014, the largest power plant in New Zealand and is located in the town of Huntly in the region Waikato on the North Island. It is operated by Genesis Energy Limited and covers approximately 20% of the total electricity needs in New Zealand. The power plant has an installed capacity of just over 1.2  GW and consists of 6 different power plant blocks:

  • Blocks 1 to 4: The four oldest blocks represent a uniform design and each have an installed capacity of 250 MW. Block 3 has only been kept in reserve since 2012, while Block 4 was permanently taken off the grid. Each of the three remaining active blocks as of 2014 can be fired either with coal or natural gas.
  • Unit 5 represents a combined gas and steam unit (CCGT) with an installed capacity of 403 MW, can only be operated with natural gas and was put into operation in 2007.
  • Unit 6 is the smallest unit with 50 MW, consisting of a gas turbine that can be started quickly and is used to cover peak loads . The unit, which was built in 2004, can be operated with either crude oil or natural gas.

Around 50% of the coal for units 1 to 4 is imported from Indonesia , the rest is obtained from various coal production sites in New Zealand. The natural gas comes from the Maui natural gas field , the largest known natural gas deposit in the Tasman Sea west of New Zealand. The Huntly power plant uses the neighboring Waikato River for cooling, and the power plant complex is one of the largest carbon dioxide emitters in New Zealand.
