The Soto de Ribera power plant ( Spanish Central térmica de Soto de Ribera ) is a coal and gas and steam combined cycle power plant in the municipality of Ribera de Arriba , Autonomous Community of Asturias , Spain . The city of Oviedo is approximately 5 km north of the power station.
The installed capacity of the power plant is 1480 MW . It is owned by EDP and operated by EDP. The power plant went into operation in 1962 with the first unit.
Power plant units
The power plant consists of five units that went into operation from 1962 to 2011. The following table gives an overview:
block | Max. Power (MW) | Start of operation | turbine | generator | Steam boiler | status |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 68 | 1962 | shut down (since November 2007) | |||
2 | 254 | 1967 | GE | GE | Combustion engineering | shut down (since 2015) |
3 | 361 | 1984 | Westinghouse | Westinghouse | Combustion engineering | Application for decommissioning for 2021 |

5 | 433 | 2011 | Alstom | Alstom | Alstom |
The coal-fired power plant with blocks 1 to 3 is on the left side of the Nalón , while the combined cycle power plant with blocks 4 and 5 is on the right-hand side of the river. The annual production of the coal-fired power plant was 4.836 billion kWh in 2002 . In blocks 4 and 5, the gas and steam turbines are connected to a common shaft ( single-shaft ).
The oldest unit of the power plant was decommissioned in 2007, Unit 2 followed in 2015. In July 2020, the operator EDP announced that it would finally decommission Unit 3 in the course of 2021. The power plant unit had previously not produced any electricity for more than a year.
