The power plant Varna is a thermal power plant , which on the northern shore of the Bay of Varna , Varna Province , Bulgaria is. The installed capacity of the power plant was 1260 MW after commissioning of all units  . At the moment (as of August 2018) it is only partially in operation. The power plant is owned by SIGDA operated and run by SIGDA.

The power plant was temporarily shut down in early 2015 because it was unable to comply with EU environmental protection requirements. It was originally powered by coal ; in the future it will be fired with natural gas .

Power plant units

The power plant consisted of six units that went into operation from 1968 to 1979. The following table gives an overview:

The new operator SIGDA had three units shut down for good in September 2017. One block has already been converted to firing with natural gas; this is intended for the remaining two blocks.

The Czech group ČEZ acquired the power plant in 2006 for € 206 million and sold it to the Bulgarian company SIGDA in October 2017 .
