Observation tower

Former Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm Tower

There is a 25-meter-high observation tower on the mountain , which is operated by the Woltersdorfer Verschönerungsverein Kranichsberg eV , founded in 1884 . It replaced a first 18-meter-high tower of the association, which was built on May 13, 1886 as the Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm Tower . This was set on fire on April 20, 1945 by members of the Volkssturm and burned down completely. In 1961, under the direction of Rudolf Post, a new fire watch and observation tower was built, which, due to its proximity to Berlin, was funded by the Greater Berlin City Administration , among others . The procurement of the materials required for the construction required a lot of skill from those involved, as the wood was to be used by the Soviet headquarters for the construction of a radio relay station . Negotiations succeeded in obtaining a total of 21 cubic meters of wood for the construction of the tower. The topping-out ceremony was celebrated on October 7, 1961, the inauguration took place on July 14, 1962. In 1976, the Ministry of State Security took over the tower, which from then on closed the public and used it as a radio and transmitter system. A bunker was built in the lower part of the tower . With the establishment of the Beautification Association on January 22nd, 1990, the foundation was laid for renewed public use. Four months later, the association received a license agreement from the community. After a few renovations and extensions, he set up a tower museum there. Under the title “When Woltersdorf was still Hollywood ”, it deals with the history of film production during the silent film era in Woltersdorf and the surrounding area.

In the tower are also marriages possible.
