The Löcknitztal nature reserve is a 448 hectare nature reserve in the Oder-Spree district in Brandenburg . It is located in the Berlin - Fürstenwalder Spree valley between Kienbaum and Grünheide . It is run by the eponymous river Löcknitz , a right tributary of the River Spree in a 13 km long fen flows through a meandering manner.
history
The valley was created in a former ice age meltwater channel . It was first used in the 18th century. In 1912 the lower part of the Löcknitz was released for shipping and is therefore not included in the area today. Until the 1960s, the valley consisted in large parts of meadow areas that were used for agriculture. Then alders and willows were brought in, which have spread since then. In 1984 the area was placed under nature protection and in 2002 it was included in the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas as a fauna and flora habitat . It is supported by the Löcknitztal e. V. , which was awarded the nature conservation prize of the NaturSchutzFonds Brandenburg foundation . In cooperation with the German Nature Conservation Union, the IG has leased parts of the area to a family business for sheep grazing. This makes it possible to promote less assertive plants like orchids and to avoid succession .
Design

Most of the nature reserve is closed to visitors, only a few areas have hiking trails. The fen decreed in its history regularly enough water so that previously occurred no peat decomposition. Ditches dug before the 1960s have now also grown over, so that the prerequisites for restoring species-rich meadows are good. In addition to alder forests, acidic oak forests and pastures, there are spring meadows, wet meadows and nutrient-poor wet meadows that alternate with sandy, poor grassland .
fauna and Flora
The water quality of the Löcknitz is described as eutrophic , but high-quality spawn communities can be found in the entire section of the river . Over 20 species of fish live in the river, such as the aland , bitterling , chub , gudgeon , hazel , asp and loach .
Many species threatened with extinction can be found on land, such as broad-leaved and stiff-leaved orchid , helmet orchid , Siberian iris or swamp stendelwort .
The smooth snake has its habitat here as well as around 100 bird species, for example the reed warbler , all three swirl species , whinchat , kingfisher , warblers and red backed killer . The crane and the osprey were also sighted . So far, 650 species of large butterflies have been identified in the valley and its surroundings .
