Sand road through the Reicherskreuzer Heide at the beginning of June 2011. Due to hard frosts in spring, a large part of the heather above ground was frozen, which resulted in the brown color.

The Reicherskreuzer Heide is a heathland east of Jamlitz and west of Schenkendöbern in Brandenburg . It is part of the extensive Lieberoser Heide . Leeskow , Reicherskreuz and Henzendorf limit the area to the north, Staakow and Pinnow to the south.

history

Ammunition load.

In the years 1942 and 1943 there were several forest fires in the region , whereby it was assumed that the largest fire (1943) was deliberately started. The areas "cleared" in this way were to be used for the construction of the Kurmark SS military training area, which began in autumn 1943 . The SS military training area was built around the village of Jamlitz near the small town of Lieberose . In mid-April 1945 the SS training area was cleared due to the approach of the Red Army . The Red Army took over the training area and began to expand it from 1954. Until 1992 the area was used as a shooting range for the GSSD and mainly for maneuvering exercises for the Warsaw Pact .

Dilapidated former Soviet military building.

After the armed forces withdrew, the Bundeswehr decided against further use of the site in 1994 and the area of the Lieberose military training area was transferred to the state of Brandenburg. A great diversity of species developed in the closed area, as large parts of the area (around four fifths) were rarely or not at all militarily polluted, while other areas were used intensively. Investigations showed, for example, over 100 breeding bird species , over 400 butterfly , around 220 hymenoptera and 55 dragonfly species , so that the end of military use had to result in a sensible concept, mainly due to the high ammunition load on the site.

Reicherskreuzer Heide and Schwansee

The Reicherskreuzer Heide belongs to the 2840 hectare nature reserve Reicherskreuzer Heide and Schwansee . This has been part of the Schlaubetal Nature Park since 1995 . The aim of nature conservation is to preserve the heathland created by the six decades of use and to regenerate groundwater . It is not a pure heather of broom heather and dwarf shrub heather , but interspersed with brambles , birch and pine forests . The forest is used for forestry purposes, the heather areas are grazed by domestic sheep in order to maintain their character. In the nature reserve you can find the Schwansee , a eutrophic channel lake, the Kleinsee Splau , small rivers and moors .

The designated hiking trails , for example to the Henzendorf boulder park , sometimes use signs to indicate that the hiking trail must not be left due to ammunition pollution. Cyclists can also ride the Spree-Neisse cycle path through the Reicherskreuzer Heidelandschaft - the 45.5 kilometer long cycle path from Beeskow to Ratzdorf connects the Spree cycle path in the west and the Oder-Neisse cycle path in the east.
