Natura 2000 and FFH areas
The NSG Skabyer Torfgraben is part of the coherent European ecological network of special protection areas Natura 2000 . The profile of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) contains the following characterization for the 304.95 hectare FFH area under the number 3748-305:
"Predominantly grassland-dominated lowland landscape with branched watercourses and switched on wet and wet forests as well as transitional moors."
Nature reserve
The ordinance on the nature reserve includes the following protection purposes:
"[...] as a location of wild growing plant communities that are rarely threatened in terms of their existence, in particular of large and small sedge areas, alder quarries, alternately moist meadows and dry grasslands as well as to preserve the remains of a moderately nutrient-supplied flow moor [...] as a habitat for animal species threatened by the population, especially as breeding and feeding area for numerous bird species and as a retreat for endangered insects, amphibians and reptiles as well as semi-aquatic mammals [...] for ecological reasons to ensure the self-cleaning power of the largely intact river system with its underwater flora and fauna that are particularly worthy of protection [...] because of its importance in the context of the regional Biotope network. "
