Kraras ( Kararas, Krarás ) was an East Timorese town in Suco Uai-Mori ( Viqueque administrative office , Viqueque municipality ), northwest of the municipal capital Viqueque . In 1983 the place was burned down by the Indonesian army .

history

In 1981 Kraras was founded as a new settlement for refugees from Bibileo . They had lived in the mountains between 1976 and 1979 after the Indonesians invaded East Timor in 1975. In 1978/79 most of the civilians surrendered and were initially settled in the city of Viqueque. Later the resettlement in Kraras followed.

On August 8, 1983, the Indonesian military post in Kraras was attacked by FALINTIL guerrillas . 14 Indonesian soldiers were killed. Four more attacks on the Indonesians in what was then the Viqueque district followed by September 6 . Fearing punitive action, hundreds of residents of Krara and neighboring towns fled to the surrounding forests.

On September 7th, the Indonesian army burned the abandoned village of Kraras. The few remaining residents were executed. Soldiers combed the region and forced captured locals to return to the destroyed village or to relocate to Viqueque. There were further executions, rape and torture. According to the Catholic Church, 287 Kraras residents are said to have been murdered. The survivors were forcibly relocated to Clalerec Mutin .

On September 18, 2008, the foundation stone was laid for a memorial to commemorate the massacre. The region is now called the Valley of the Widows .
