It runs national information and prevention campaigns on breast cancer , colon cancer and skin cancer , among other thingsand works with partner organizations to promote tobacco prevention, healthy eating and exercise. It also offers training and further education for specialists.
The Swiss Cancer League is a national umbrella organization based in Bern and brings together 18 cantonal and regional leagues. It is mainly financed by donations and is ZEWO certified.
history
After the "International Association for Cancer Research" was founded in Berlin in 1908 , there were efforts in Switzerland to found a national committee for cancer research. Driving forces were the Geneva «Société de la lutte contre le cancer», which existed since 1907, and the Federal Health Office. The doctors Theodor Kocher (the Bernese was the first surgeon to be awarded the Nobel Prize in 1909 ), Wilhelm Kolle and Albrecht Burckhardt had promised to participate .
The Swiss Cancer League was founded in 1910 under the name "Swiss Association for Combating Cancer" in Bern.
After several name changes over the decades, today's official name was introduced in 2001.
organization
The association has only collective members. These are the 18 cantonal and regional cancer leagues, the representatives of which form the assembly of delegates as the highest body. The board forms the strategic management body of the association. It currently consists of twelve members. The five-person management is responsible for the operational management. It is composed of the managing director and the heads of the four departments (prevention, support & aftercare, research, innovation & development, marketing, communication & fundraising, finance, human resources & services). Around 100 people are employed at the headquarters of the Swiss Cancer League in Bern.
The Swiss Cancer League works closely with other cancer organizations. The Swiss Cancer League, the cantonal and regional cancer leagues and the partner organization Swiss Cancer Research supported numerous research projects against cancer with 25 million francs in 2016. The Cancer League is also committed to developing and implementing measures to combat cancer in Switzerland, namely the National Strategy Against Cancer , a long-term program of various organizations and authorities such as the Federal Office of Public Health.
