The Landratsamt (LRA) is the name for the administration of a district in some countries in Germany , in other countries there is the district administration instead .
The district office is expressly referred to in the district regulations of the states of Baden-Württemberg , Bavaria , Saxony and Thuringia . The district regulation of Rhineland-Palatinate uses the term district administration. In Brandenburg , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , North Rhine-Westphalia , Saarland , Saxony-Anhalt and Schleswig-Holstein , the relevant authority is called "the district administrator", even if it does not consist of a single person, but rather a large number of employees on behalf of the "district administrator" act. Outside of legal language usage, however, one can also speak of the "district office", the "district administration" or the "district house" in these countries.
The district office, the district administration or "the district administrator" is in most German states both a local self-government authority and a lower state administrative authority, so it has a dual function . In the area of the lower state administrative authority, the district council has no say. The state administrative hierarchy applies here, the district office with the district administrator at the top is bound by the instructions of the superior state authorities (district governments and ministries). (One speaks of an organ lending because the district administrator, actually an organ of the district, is "borrowed" from the state in order to carry out state administration.)
In the states with full communalisation ( Lower Saxony , Saarland , Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt ), the tasks of the lower state administrative authority are performed as delegated tasks by the district. This gives the district's democratic bodies the authority to issue guidelines . The influence of the state middle and higher authorities is limited to legal and technical supervision .
“Landratsamt” can also be the name of a building in which the district administration sits or used to sit, regardless of whether the authority located there is also called that.

- Restaurant permits
- Veterinary and food control
- Cadastral
- Municipal supervision
- environmental Protection
- Youth welfare (except in independent cities)
- Civil protection
As a district authority , it is responsible for the ongoing administration, e.g. B. for:
- Tasks as a school authority
- Transport authority for local public transport
- Waste management
- Hospitals as carriers or supervisory authorities
