Kremer Pigmente GmbH und Co. KG is a company specializing in the production of historical pigments with its headquarters in Aichstetten in the Ravensburg district .

history

Company founder Georg Kremer studied chemistry and physics in Stuttgart and Tübingen and received his doctorate in physical chemistry . While he was doing research at the Chair of Theoretical and Physical Chemistry at the University of Tübingen, a restorer friend asked him for help in the search for smalt , a ground glass of blue paint containing cobalt. Since the invention of Smalte in Mesopotamia around 4000 years ago, this glass was often used to represent “sky” or the element “air” until the Baroque era . As there was no manufacturer of smalt pigments, Kremer went in search of the long-lost recipe for the manufacture of this pigment and he actually succeeded in producing smalt pigments in his basement, which had been converted into a laboratory. This is how the history of Kremer pigments began in 1977.

The company's service also includes the provision of recipes for the production of painting materials as well as chemical information on the pigments. Suitability lists and processing instructions can also be found on the company's website.

In addition to the main location in Aichstetten, the company operates its own branches in New York and Munich. In addition, many color shops have pigments and materials from Kremer Pigmente GmbH & Co. KG in their range.

Kremer Pigments is a company specializing in the production of historical color pigments. In their production, mainly naturally occurring raw materials such as earth, minerals or plants are used and processed according to old recipes, some of which come from the Middle Ages. These pigments are especially important for restorers, as they make it possible to faithfully restore pictures, sculptures or frescoes.

The company's head office in Aichstetten has its own paint mill - Kremer is one of the last manufacturers of small quantities of rare pigments from in-house production. There are also research laboratories for colorant chemistry for new colorants and for the analysis of historical samples. Research into historical color recipes, rediscovered raw materials and their extraction form the basis of the company. Kremer Pigments also works according to orders and manufactures colorants that are otherwise no longer available, such as handkerchiefs . The company has an extensive archive of color samples as reference material.

In addition, the company deals in painting materials and associated tools (brushes, canvases, binders), as well as restoration supplies and secondary literature on the preservation of monuments .

In addition to the manufacture of painting materials and their distribution, the company also offers courses several times a year on various topics such as "Manufacture and use of pigments". It is also possible to take a tour of the Aichstetten plant.
