Location of Kreuzberg 61 in Berlin

Kreuzberg 61 is the slang term for the larger (western) part of the Berlin district of Kreuzberg , in contrast to the smaller (eastern) Kreuzberg 36 . Kreuzberg 61 is considered bourgeois and artistic-intellectual.

The name Kreuzberg 61 comes from the fact that until 1993, when the five-digit postcodes were introduced in Germany , this part of Berlin was the postal delivery district "1000 Berlin 61". The number "61" has been used since 1962 for the older "SW 61" (southwest, see post offices in West Berlin before 1962 ) and "SW 29". In contrast to the name "SO 36", which is still in use today for the eastern part of Kreuzberg, "SW 61" - like most of the other delivery designations in Berlin - was hardly used colloquially soon after the introduction of the purely numerical successor. Instead, one often says “Kreuzberg 61” or “61” for short.

The later delivery district “1000 Berlin 61”, in contrast to “SO 36”, which was almost identical to the previous “Berlin SO” and the later “1000 Berlin 36”, consisted of several older delivery districts, for example SW 11 , SW 68, SW 47 or S 42 whereby the boundary between the coarse divisions "S." and "SW" ran roughly along the Alexandrinen, Schleiermacher and Golßener Strasse line.

The former "Kreuzberg 61" can still be recognized today by the delivery district numbers 10961 to 10969.

An older name for this area is Tempelhofer Vorstadt - this was incorporated into Berlin in 1861 and formed its own district until 1920. The areas are largely identical, but the Landwehr Canal formed the northern border of the Tempelhofer Vorstadt, whereas Kreuzberg 61 also extends beyond it.
