A cross tug at the Sambühl in Volkach

There are several cross tugs in the area of the community of Volkach . They show Jesus Christ carrying the cross and are mostly registered architectural monuments.

City of Volkach

Citizens Hospital

The Kreuzschlepper at the Bürgerspital in the core town of Volkach shows Jesus in a kneeling position. The wall is used as a support for the statue. The reminder on the base has only survived in fragments. Before 1878 the statue of Jesus was in a garden on Professor-Jäcklein Straße. With the construction of the citizen hospital he came to the property. He was given the place in the front yard in 1978. It is difficult to date the figure precisely.

Sambühl

This statue of Jesus was only donated in 1902, making it the youngest of the Volkach cross tugs. Josef Wächter, who later became mayor and honorary citizen of the city, had it built. The progressive decay made a restoration necessary, which was financed by private and public funds. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation lists the statue under the number D-6-75-174-140.

Schubertstrasse

In the garden at Schubertstrasse 3a, Jesus is on a pillar. The height of 1.72 m makes the semicircular capital appear at eye level. The tractor bears an inscription as a warning . " Oall who walk the / way for / and look at me / the concern is last ". The original location of the statue is unclear. A donation from Stammheim left the Kreuzschlepper to a Volkach doctor. The unresolved ownership situation subsequently led to a lawsuit. Today the tug is listed by the Bavarian State Office under monument number D-6-75-174-106.

Sommeracher Strasse

There is also a pillar cross tractor at the end of Sommeracher Straße. It was built in 1719 and is 1.70 m high. The names of the donors can be found in his font . Conrad and Annamaria Schwartz had the statue erected. Jesus is shown here in an upward motion that is a variation of the usual shapes. The State Office for Monument Preservation has this cruiser under the number D-6-75-174-116.

To the quarry

In 1709 this tug was built on an old pilgrimage route . His warning to the passers-by reads: " God [to honor] / allenn süntten / unrepenterin to / ... daily contemplation / alen bypassers / Kristenn zur Erriner / ug the bitterenn / lead under death / nn anno 1709 ". The Christ statue is 1.70 m long and depicted lying down. The filigree robe represents baroque art work. The figure was previously painted. The monument number here is D-6-75-174-136.

Wine route

The figure in the Volkacher Weinstrasse was erected in 1702 and was probably one of the first of its kind that is still standing today. It is leaning against the wall at number 7 and is 3 m high. This height speaks for an original location that can be seen from afar; in 1958, no cross tug was recorded here. His slogan cartouche in the column capital says: " All of you who pass before / Mercket see / Whether there is also a Schmertz / like my Schmertz ... ". The Bavarian State Office lists this cruiser under the monument number D-6-75-174-130.

Astheim

At the lower field

This cruiser is located near the bridge pillar on the Astheim side. It was built in the 18th century and is on a brick base. Jesus lies and is protected by a modern canopy. In the small saying cartouche is the slogan " Praised / be Jesus / Christ! ". The Bavarian State Office carries this tractor under the number D-6-75-174-173.

State road

The other Astheimer Kreuzschlepper is directly on the state road 2260 just before the bridge approach to Volkach. It dates from the 18th century and is made of sandstone . In August 2016, the wayside shrine was badly damaged by strangers. His monument number is D-6-75-174-172.

Escherndorf

A special form of the cruiser can be found in Escherndorf. At the county road KT 31 towards Astheim there is a Jesus enthroned on two pillars. Below him, in a recess, is a statue of St. Veronica . She is represented with the handkerchief in her hand. The ensemble was created in the 18th century and is managed by the State Office for Monument Preservation under the number D-6-75-174-220.

Drive

Kaulberg

The Kreuzschlepper on Kaulberg is on the courtyard wall at house number 10. It was placed loosely on the wall here. Its year of construction 1716 is noted in the sandstone cartouche. The reminder is " O all of you sinners, Bedencket whether / be a pain the same as / my pain ." Johann Michael Pfister is noted as the founder. The Bavarian State Monument Office registers it under the number D-6-75-174-239.

Mönchsberg

In the middle of the vineyards, on the so-called Mönchsberg, there is another cruiser. It is located on a column that is decorated with two angel heads and a garland. The statue was built in 1704. The statue of Jesus made of sandstone is classified as a monument under the number D-6-75-174-250 by the Monument Preservation Office.

Obervolkach

The Kreuzschlepper in Obervolkach is a rarity among the Lower Franconian wayside shrines. The small monument erected in 1716 shows Jesus as a tormented man. A hangman gives him a kick. In addition, the figure was placed on an altar shrine with a canopy. The warning in the cartouche reads: " O man stand in style and look at me / Gedenck your sins are / guilty of that I have borne the difficult creitz caused a lot of nuisance ." Another inscription refers to the founder Johann Pfriem, who was Würzburg mayor in Obervolkach.

Rimbach

The most modern of the cross tugs in the Volkach community is on Tannenstrasse in Rimbach . It is leaning against a wall and dates from the first half of the 20th century. Unlike the other tugs, it is made of limestone . A table base divides the statue. He also enjoys monument protection, he is classified under the number D-6-75-174-311.

Vogelsburg

Another cruiser is located in the Vogelsburg district in the vineyards of the Escherndorfer Lump vineyard. It was attached to a pillar and so overlooks the footpath to the Vogelsburg. Its year of construction is unclear. The 18th century is assumed. The figure is made of sandstone and is listed under the number D-6-75-174-225.
