The wayside shrine next to the chapel, 2013

The so-called Kreuzschlepperbildstock (also Altarbildstock , baldachinbildstock ) is a torture in the Lower Franconian Obervolkach . The wayside shrine is unique in all of Franconia due to its depiction of the stepped Christ and is located next to the Michael's Chapel in the west of the village.

history

The history of the wayside shrine is closely linked to the promotion of popular piety at the beginning of the 18th century. Small devotional pictures and stone wayside shrines were made everywhere in Franconia. The motif of the stepped Christ under the cross appeared for the first time in Herlheim in what is today the district of Schweinfurt and Baldersheim , today a district of Aub. Similar representations were made in Oberschwarzach , Röttingen and Bad Brückenau , but the figures were never to be found in connection with an altarpiece.

From 1702 the tradition of the cruiser appeared in the area of today's town Volkach . In 1716, the Obervolkacher Stock was created by Johannes and his wife Margaretha Pfriem. Pfriem was Mayor of Obervolkach in 1681 and from 1688 he represented the Würzburg prince-bishop as mayor in town. The wayside shrine was set up at the exit towards Volkach and was used as a prayer station for pilgrimages to the Maria im Weingarten church and for Corpus Christi processions.

The sculptor who created the torture is unknown. Possibly it was the Ochsenfurt artist G. Dettelbacher, who created similar works in the region. Perhaps the stonemason came to Obervolkach in the course of the construction of the Michael's Chapel and could also be hired to build the wayside shrine. In 1970 the stick was moved next to the chapel, before it was restored. After the piece had already been classified as a monument at the beginning of the 20th century , it could not be re-qualified in 2015.

description

The characteristic cross tug on the wayside shrine, 2013

The structure of the wayside shrine is similar to the so-called gouged torture at the entrance to Hallburg in nearby Nordheim am Main . However, there is no longer a group of figures with a court servant. The wayside shrine has the shape of a baroque processional altar, which ends with a round arched roof. It is framed by four round columns. They have a raised, rectangular base and are shown wrapped in vine leaves.

The processional altar is supported on three sides only by the columns. The fourth, back side, on the other hand, shows a relief of the crucifixion with assistants and a praying donor. Above it, in the exit zone, there is the depiction of God the Father in a choir of angels. He forms one hand in a gesture of blessing and carries the globe and a scepter in the other. Below is the dove of the Holy Spirit .

The actual specialty of the stick can be found on a profiled base above. A group of figures showing the falling Christ with the cross (cross tug) and a court servant kicking him. The victim is kneeling and has supported himself with his right hand while he is carrying the oversized cross with his left. Behind it is a standing servant in the robe of a Roman soldier . He kicks the fallen victim with his left, bare foot.

The entire wayside shrine was made of sandstone and is not painted. Several inscriptions attest to the foundation dates. The following, partly illegible inscription can be found in the base: “God erected this image of torture in honor of the honorable and eighth bier Johanneß Pfriem and Margaretha his housewife”. A motto in the console reads: “O man stand in style and look at me / Gedenck your sins are / guilty of that I have worn the difficult creitz ge / liten viel blage”.
