The Mahonia repens ( Mahonia repens ) is a plant from the family of Barberry (Berberidaceae).
description
The creeping Oregon grape is a prostrate, creeping and runners-forming evergreen shrub that reaches a height of 50 centimeters. The leaves are up to 25 centimeters long; they consist of three to seven leaflets that are up to 6 inches long; its edge is serrated almost completely to a cusp, with five to nine teeth on each side. The upper side of the leaf is matt gray-green and shimmering like a wax; in winter the leaflets can take on a slightly reddish color. The leaf stalks are 2.5 inches long. The deep yellow fragrant flowers appear in spring; six of them are in up to 8 centimeters long terminal clusters. The spherical berries are blue-black and frosted.

It is native to the coniferous forests of western Canada and the USA and grows there at altitudes between 1400 and 3250 meters in the province of British Columbia and in the US states of Washington , Arizona , California , Wyoming and western Texas .
use
This species is used as a ground cover ornamental shrub in gardens and parks. Mahonia repens makes only low demands on the location and is hardy in Central Europe.
Systematics
Different varieties or forms of creeping Oregon grape are known:
- Mahonia repens var. Macrocarpa Jouin grows upright, reaches a height of one meter and has large berry fruits.
- Mahonia repens var. Rotundifolia Fedde is leafy, more than 1 meter tall and has almost entire and broadly ovate leaves; it is also particularly hardy.
- Mahonia repens f. subcordata Rehder with densely packed leaves, the base of which is heart-shaped
