War memorial (Bad Homburg)
The war memorial of the city Bad Homburg recalls the five Homburger soldiers in French German War of 1870 / 1871 was cast. It was designed by the builder Christian Holler and executed by the sculptor Jacob Mey . The ceremonial unveiling took place on May 10, 1875 . The local warrior association, which was founded on the occasion of the city's first Sedan celebration , acted as the benefactor .
The memorial was erected on Waisenhausplatz in the center of the so-called Neustadt von Homburg. It consists of a three and a half meter high column of Doric order made of red sandstone . It sits on a cube-shaped stone base that can be reached via several steps. At the top the column ends with a capital on which a crowned Prussian eagle with outstretched wings is enthroned.
In terms of art history, the Bad Homburg war memorial is part of a whole series of similar monuments, which were intended to illustrate the military success of the Prussian army in the areas annexed by Prussia after the war of 1866 .
The monument is a listed cultural monument.
